Ending Animal Abuse in Asia

More than 10,000 bears in China and Vietnam are kept on bile farms to support the barbaric bear bile trade. After learning of this practice in 1998, Jill Robinson founded Animals Asia from her Hong Kong home to promote compassion and respect for all animals and bring about long-term change on the continent.

Rescuing Bears from Bile Farms

The Holtzman Wildlife Foundation has made a grant to Animals Asia to support the construction of a sanctuary in Vietnam to house bears that have been rescued from SE Asia bile farms. Over 10,000 bears, mostly moon bears, but some sun bears and brown bears are kept in captivity in Asia to have bile extracted from their gall bladders on a regular basis. Animals Asia has advocated for the closure of these farms for many years and provides life-long care for rescued bears at facilities in China and Vietnam.

Supporting Animal Welfare Education

In its first grant to Animals Asia, the Foundation supported the “One Life” animal welfare education program. The goal of One Life was to establish a comprehensive animal welfare education program in primary schools in targeted cities in China.

Children who participate make lifelong compassionate choices, demonstrate strong ethics, and become responsible citizens, improving the welfare of animals in the long term.
